Torrid, a leading plus-size clothing retailer, plans to close up to 180 underperforming stores this year, which represents nearly 30% of its physical locations. This decision is part of Torrid's strategy to focus more on digital sales, as highlighted in their first-quarter earnings report released on June 5. CEO Lisa Harper stated that approximately 70% of Torrid's customers now prefer shopping online, prompting the company to optimize its retail footprint and reinvest in areas that drive long-term growth.

As of January, Torrid had already closed two locations, bringing its total store count to 632. The company has not yet disclosed which specific stores will close. The closures come amidst a broader trend of retail downsizing, with other brands like Lane Bryant and Avenue also reducing their physical presence in recent years.

The move to shutter stores aims to reduce fixed costs and enhance profitability. Harper explained that Torrid is in a strong financial position, despite a nearly 5% decrease in first-quarter sales compared to the previous year. The company projects net sales to be between $1.03 billion and $1.055 billion for the year, with plans to offset tariff impacts through cost reductions and store optimization.

While the closures are seen as a strategic shift, they have raised concerns among customers who rely on physical stores for plus-size clothing options. Christine Murphy, an advocate for the plus-size clothing industry, expressed her disappointment, noting that the reduction in brick-and-mortar stores limits last-minute shopping options for plus-size individuals.

Torrid's store closures are expected to occur mostly in the fourth quarter, with benefits to profitability anticipated in the first half of next year. Despite the decline in physical store importance, Harper emphasized that they remain vital for brand-building and customer engagement.
