House Speaker Mike Johnson said he doesn't see a way for the U.S. Constitution to be amended to allow President Donald Trump to run for a third term.

"There is the 22nd Amendment," Johnson told reporters at a news conference on Tuesday (October 28) via USA TODAY. "I think the president knows. And he and I have talked about the constrictions of the Constitution."

Johnson acknowledged that Trump "has a good time" trolling Democrats about "the very prospect" of a potential third term with the widely circulated "Trump 2028" hats and memes, but claimed there was no actual possibility of another campaign happening.

"I don't see a way to amend the Constitution," he added. "But I can tell you that we are not going to take our foot off the gas pedal. We're going to deliver for the American people, and we've got a great run ahead of us left – four strong years."

Johnson's comments came hours after Trump, himself, wouldn't rule out the possibility of running for a third term in 2028, despite the 22nd Amendment limiting presidents to two terms, while addressing reporters on board Air Force One during a flight to Japan on Monday (October 27) via ABC News.

"I would love to do it," Trump said when asked about a potential bid for a third term.

"I have my best numbers ever. It's very terrible. I have my best numbers," he added.

"Am I not ruling it out? You'll have to tell me," Trump said.

"All I can tell you is that we have a great, a great group of people, which they don't," he added, comparing the Republican Party to the Democratic Party.

Trump's comments followed his former chief strategist Steve Bannon's claim that he "is going to be President in 2028...and people just ought to get accommodated with that" to the Economist last week. The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution prohibits a president from being elected "more than twice" and when Trump was asked if he'd consider fighting it in court he responded, "I haven't really thought about it."

"We have some very good people, as you know, but I've had, I have the best poll numbers I've ever had," Trump said via ABC News.

The president specifically mentioned Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio when referencing the "very good" potential Republican candidates for the 2028 election.

"We have great people. I don't have to get into that, but we have one of them standing right here. We have, JD, obviously the vice president is great. Marco's great," he said.

Trump did, however, dismiss the idea of running on the 2028 Republican ticket as vice president on Monday.

"Yeah, I'd be allowed to do that," he said. "I guess I think it's too cute. Yeah, I would rule that out because it's too cute. I think the people wouldn't like that. It's too cute. It's not -- it wouldn't be right."

Trump also claimed that his recent health tests he received at Walter Reed hospital earlier this month were "some of the best reports for the age, some of the best reports they've ever seen."
