Robert Crimo III, who killed seven people and wounded nearly 50 others during a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois, in 2022, was sentenced to life in prison without parole on Thursday (April 24). Crimo, 24, unexpectedly pleaded guilty in March to 69 counts of murder and attempted murder, avoiding a lengthy trial. Judge Victoria A. Rossetti handed down seven consecutive life sentences, stating Crimo showed a "complete disregard for human life" and is "beyond rehabilitation."

The shooting occurred on July 4, 2022, when Crimo fired more than 70 bullets from a rooftop, causing chaos and panic among parade-goers. He fled the scene disguised as a woman but was captured later that evening. The victims included Eduardo Uvaldo, Nicolas Toledo-Zaragoza, Katherine Goldstein, Irina McCarthy, Kevin McCarthy, Jacquelyn Sundheim, and Stephen Straus. Crimo's actions left the community in shock and grief, with survivors and families of victims expressing their ongoing trauma during the sentencing hearing.

Crimo had a history of erratic behavior and was visited by police twice before the attack, including an incident in 2019 when authorities confiscated knives after he threatened to "kill everyone" in his house. Despite this, he legally purchased the rifle used in the shooting. His father, Robert Crimo Jr., pleaded guilty to reckless conduct for sponsoring his son's gun license application and was sentenced to 60 days in jail and community service, according to NBC News.

During the sentencing, survivors and family members recounted the horror of the day and the lasting impact on their lives. Erica Weeder, a survivor, described her ongoing mental struggles, while Leah Sundheim, whose mother was killed, expressed her anger towards Crimo. The community hopes the sentence brings some closure, though the trauma of the event lingers.
