SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — On Sunday afternoon, Somerville residents came together to celebrate the 18th annual What the Fluff? Festival.

The Union Square Main Streets and Somerville Arts Council partner each year to honor the birthplace of fluff.

“It’s a massive undertaking for a small non-profit like ours, but it tells the story of our neighborhood and brings us all together,” said Union Square Main Streets’ Jessica Eshleman.

Some of the highlights of the festival were the fluff-filled games. One of those games was fluff jousting, where contenders duked it out with marshmallow-covered pool noodles on a low balance beam.

“We had some really long standoffs,” said two-time fluff jousting champion Rebacca. “I had someone go directly for my hair with the pool noodle, which is, I think, outside of game regulations.”

A look-alike Archibald Query, who created fluff in 1917, officiated fluff jousting and fluff musical chairs.

“We are a great community of people who care and are sweet and stick together, all things that fluff do,” said the likeness of Query.

With sticky fingers, WBZ's Jay Willett (@JayWillettWBZ) reports.
