Two Seriously Injured In Reading Apartment Fire

(WBZ NewsRadio) — Two people were taken to the hospital Monday morning after a large fire swept through a Reading apartment building on High and Washington Streets, west of Route 28.

Fire crews responded to the call around 3:30 a.m. Monday morning.

"The fire is out," Reading Fire Chief Gregg Burns said. "We're in the process of doing the fire investigation."

Witnesses told WBZ NewsRadio's James Rojas that CPR was being performed on the injured residents, who were found unconscious in a third-floor apartment.

Burns said the displaced residents will have to wait several days before they can return to the home.

"We're coordinating with the owner to turn the building back over.... so it can get cleaned up so people can go back in," Burns said. "But that will be several days before that can happen."

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
