BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Massachusetts will be transitioning to a new form of E-ZPass on Sunday, Mar.1. The hard-plastic transponders that Massachusetts residents have grown accustomed to for years will be replaced with a small sticker that you put on your windshield.

The new sticker tags will be provided free of charge. MassDot officials say the stickers will have RFID capabilities.

“It has a chip that is embedded into the paper. It works on an RFID (Radio-frequency identification) system, so it means it’s energized as passes underneath tolling gantries. They can read it accurately just like you can a regular transponder, and then you go on your way,” Highway Administrator Johnathan Gulliver said.

MassDOT says the stickers only cost $0.55 to produce, compared to $6.70 to produce the previous transponders. Sticker tags are projected to save MassDOT approximately $615,000 per month, and approximately $7.38 million per year.

Drivers with the current transponder do not need to take any action as they will still work properly.
