CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — After nearly a year of closures along Mount Auburn Street in Cambridge, the busy stretch of road reopened Friday following the demolition of the Riverview Condos earlier this year.

The building was slotted for demolition after structural issues were discovered in 2023. The nine-story building was also contaminated with asbestos, which impacted the overall project timeline.

But after the project was finished, road closures continued to plague commuters in Cambridge for weeks. That changed on Friday when fences that blocked the street in both directions were cleared.

One resident said the area "looks a lot better" and predicts traffic will be "easier to deal with."

"The entire neighborhood is really looking forward to the completion of this," another resident said.

On their website, the City of Cambridge said they appreciate "the patience and cooperation of residents, businesses, and commuters throughout the closure period."
