MEDFORD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — One of the new MBTA Orange Line cars introduced in August derailed Monday afternoon while traveling through the Wellington Rail Yard.

The MBTA told WBZ NewsRadio the train was not in service at the time, having finished its service during the morning commute.

The transit authority said the train was moving slowly through the Medford yard when the last car in a six-car train came off the rails as it passed over a track switch.

The exact cause of the derailment is under investigation.

The track switch over which the car derailed is set to be replaced as part of $102 million in upgrades to the Wellington Rail Yard.
