BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng appeared before the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, talking about the future of the transportation authority at the ‘Transportation First’ event.

The MBTA has announced several changes coming in 2026 for services around the State. From eliminating speed restrictions on the T, to goals of modernizing signals and expanding regional rails, Eng said he isn’t giving up this chance.

“There is so much opportunity over the last few years that we need to build upon,” said Eng. “When this is done, they will be able to better run service later this year, and we will further shorten trips for people.”

Chamber President Jim Rooney was at the event and said it’s important to make sure public transport is running up to standards.

“We have to fix transportation,” said Rooney. “Transportation underpins the solutions to housing issues, climate change issues, access and opportunity issues.”

Eng hopes that the work done during February’s blizzard has gained the trust of travelers and wants them to know the MBTA will follow through on the upcoming plans.

“For us to be able to restore full service two days after that snowfall event, I think, is a testament to the hard work that the entire team,” said Eng. “I need to be able to show the public that the trains going through your neighborhood, they will be quieter, and that the future is not decades away, it could be sooner.”

Eng said he’s willing to serve as the MBTA Secretary and General Manager for as long as needed.
