BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Massachusetts State Representatives wore red to raise awareness for women's heart health at the State House on Thursday.

The Massachusetts Caucus of Women's Legislators dressed in red along with their colleagues to support the American Heart Association's "Go Red for Women" movement.

They stood on the Grand Staircase in the State House, women wearing red dresses, sweaters, and jackets and their male colleagues wearing red ties.

Senate Co-chair for the Women's Legislature Caucus, Robyn Kennedy had a red scarf on for the event.

She said, "it's about raising awareness about cardiovascular health, making sure that we are not only raising awareness, but that we are investing in research and science and funding to make sure that we are supporting treatment and cures."

Senator Kennedy said cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women and they wanted to raise awareness during February for American Heart Month.

"Historically we've seen not only disparities when it comes to women's health but particularly for women of color and so raising awareness and talking about that is the first step," Kennedy said.

Kennedy said she thinks that it's important for representatives to raise awareness since they can put words into action.

"We're blessed in Massachusetts to have a plethora of research institutions," Kennedy said, and added that the important thing is making sure that they have the tools they need for the research, and that women have the resources that they need.
