BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The average gas price in Massachusetts increased 7 cents per gallon overnight as the conflict in the Middle East rages on.

As of Wednesday, the average gas price in the state costs $3.04, that’s up 14 cents from last week, according to AAA.

Other New England states are also seeing higher prices at the pump. Connecticut is up 8 cents, and Rhode Island is up 9 cents since yesterday. The average price per gallon is $3.04 for both states.

Meanwhile, the national average is $3.19 per gallon, up 9 cents overnight and 22 cents compared to last week. This is the first time since December the national average reached above $3.

AAA said Iranian attacks on oil and gas infrastructures in the region and a blockage of cargos through the Strait of Hormuz, where nearly 20% of the world’s oil supply passes through, are driving forces behind the higher prices.

In the meantime, AAA said here are some ways drivers can save on gas:

  • Shop around. Be strategic about fueling up so you can reward the gas station offering the best price with your business.
  • Don’t wait until you’re on empty, which might force you to fill up at a more expensive station, like those at rest stops or right off the highway.
  • Don’t speed. As speed increases above 50mph, aerodynamic drag causes fuel economy to drop off significantly.
  • Know which fuel you really need.
  • Look for rewards and discounts. Many gas stations offer discounted prices for drivers who use their app or other rewards program.
