BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — (UPDATED 12:33 P.M.) A Dorchester man was ordered held without bail on Tuesday, after a Boston Police Officer was shot in Dorchester on Monday night.
Authorities say the shooting happened at around 9:30 P.M. on Esmond St., after police responded to reports of a person with a gun. The suspect, 31-year-old Avery Lewis of Dorchester, allegedly fired one round at a group of officers, hitting one of them in the chest. The other officers on the scene arrested the suspect and recovered the gun.
Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox said the officer who was shot was wearing a bulletproof vest and “is going to be okay.” He was transported to Boston Medical Center with what are not believed to be life-threatening injuries. Authorities have not released the identity of the officer.
Lewis now faces multiple charges, including armed assault to murder, assault and battery on a police officer, unlawful possession of a firearm and more. Lewis was arraigned in Dorchester District Court on Tuesday and ordered held without bail.
