Five law enforcement officers were shot, three fatally, while serving a warrant in North Codorus Township, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday (September 17). The officers were involved in a domestic-related investigation when the incident occurred. The shooter was killed by police, and authorities have confirmed there is no ongoing threat.
Governor Josh Shapiro expressed his condolences, stating, "We grieve the loss of life of three precious souls who served this county, who served this Commonwealth, who served this country." He emphasized the need for societal improvement to prevent such violence, particularly in addressing mental health issues.
The incident took place in a rural area about 115 miles west of Philadelphia, near the Maryland line. York Hospital is treating two individuals in serious condition, and security protocols have been enhanced. The identities of the shooter and the officers involved have not been disclosed due to the ongoing investigation.
Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Christopher Paris pledged a thorough investigation, describing the day as one of the deadliest for Pennsylvania police in recent history. In 2009, a similar incident occurred when three Pittsburgh officers were ambushed and killed during a domestic disturbance call.
Attorney General Pamela Bondi called the violence against police "a scourge on our society" and noted that federal agents are supporting local officers in the investigation.
