A plane crash occurred at Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Virginia, on Thursday (April 24). The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the crash of an experimental MX Aircraft MXS, a single-seat stunt plane that is often used in air shows. The incident happened as the plane was approaching the base around 11:50 a.m. local time.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that only the pilot was on board during the crash. Emergency responders are currently on the scene, and the investigation is ongoing.
Officials have not provided any information about the identity of the pilot.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The NTSB will lead the investigation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
"An NTSB investigator is en route to the scene and is expected to arrive tomorrow morning," the agency said in a statement to Newsweek. "Once on site, the investigator will begin the process of documenting the scene and examining the aircraft. The aircraft will then be recovered to a secure facility for further evaluation."
The crash occurred just a few days before the biennial Air Power Over Hampton Roads air show, but officials have not confirmed any connection between the crash and the upcoming event.
