MATTAPAN (WBZ-AM) -- A shooting on Deering Road in Mattapan Tuesday morning left one man dead and two injured.

Boston Police Commissioner William Gross confirmed the man's death at the scene, but said

One woman named Shay who lives on the street said she heard "rapid fire," then ran out of her apartment because she feared for her son. She said she saw two strangers getting out of a car with gunshot wounds to their shoulder and arms, and calling for help for a third victim. That's when her training as a nurse kicked in.

"I got fresh towels and applied tourniquets," Shay said. "And made them raised, keeped them calm, talked to them, told them my name, asked them theirs, and just did what I'm supposed to do."

Shay said there was nothing anyone could do for the third man, who becomes Boston's 34th homicide of 2018.

Comissioner Gross said the men were in their late 20s, and had just gotten into their car after eating breakfast nearby at a Blue Hill Ave greasy spoon. Police believe the shooting was targeted.

"Whether it was gang-related or not, we can't ascertain that yet," Gross said. "Active investigation, but preliminarily, it does not appear to be random."

Commssioner Gross asked for the public's help with the investigation.

"We're asking for everybody's help on this," he said. "Every bit of information is important."

Anyone who witnessed the shooting or may have any information is asked to call Boston Police Homicide Unit 617-343-3470 or send a mobile text message to 800-494-TIPS.
