Vice President JD Vance has defended the U.S.-Iran framework agreement, which is set to be signed on Friday (June 19) in Geneva. The deal aims to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. However, the agreement has faced skepticism from both Democrats and some Republicans, primarily due to concerns about potential U.S. funds being sent to Iran. Vance has clarified that the agreement does not involve American taxpayer money being sent to Iran. Instead, it allows Iran to reach peaceful benchmarks, enabling other countries to invest in Iranian infrastructure.

According to CNBC, the agreement will extend the U.S.-Iran ceasefire for 60 days and set a framework for future negotiations on Tehran’s nuclear program. President Donald Trump insists that the deal is beneficial, as it opens the Strait of Hormuz and prevents Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Trump has also emphasized that the U.S. is not providing Iran with $300 billion, as some reports have suggested.

The deal's signing is expected to involve Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, signaling the involvement of Iran’s conservative faction. CNN reports that international nuclear inspectors will be allowed back into Iran under the terms of the agreement. The deal also includes provisions for Iran to destroy its stockpile of highly enriched uranium.

Despite the positive outlook from the U.S. administration, the agreement faces potential legal and political challenges. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed concerns, stating that he and Trump do not always agree on the approach. The Guardian notes that the deal does not require Israel to withdraw from Lebanon, which remains a point of contention.

As the agreement moves forward, further negotiations are expected to address the technical details and ensure compliance with the outlined commitments.
