WESTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) —With the growing threat of the Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) virus, Weston High School has rescheduled many of their night football games to the afternoon.
According to the school’s athletic director, Michael McGrath, the decision was made when the area was updated to moderate risk for the EEE virus.
The changes included Friday night’s, which was rescheduled to Saturday afternoon, in order to keep student athletes and spectators safe from the mosquito-borne virus.
“We want to make sure they’re back home prior to dusk when mosquitos start to come out,” athletic director Michael McGrath said.
McGrath said that he “feels bad” for the seniors who might be missing out on Friday night football games.
However, he iterated that safety comes first.
“We’re talk about people’s lives… you have to take everything into account,” McGrath said. “The risks far outweigh the benefits of playing a night game.”
