BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Verizon's 5G cellular service will be rolled out in Boston's Fenway area Tuesday.

The 5G network is designed to have a faster data delivery speed than the current 4G network, as well as most home broadband services. According to Verizon, 5G allows for streaming 4K movies without buffering, video chat with near zero lag, and augmented reality that responds in near real-time.

"From investing in Boston's Digital Equity Fund to bringing Fios internet and cable to every neighborhood, Verizon has been a strong partner to Boston," said Boston Mayor Marty Walsh. "I'm pleased to see Verizon expanding their 5G network in Boston, and look forward to their continued investment in our city."

Verizon 5G does have its limitations, namely a limited range and the inability to penetrate the walls of buildings. The company has acknowledged these faults, but stresses that the network is perfectly suited for areas where people gather, such as Fenway Park and Northeastern University.

Consumers will also need to purchase new 5G-compatible phones in order to use the network.

Verizon plans to introduce 5G service to other parts of Boston in the coming months. There are also plans to introduce a version of the network that would have a greater range and be able to get a signal indoors.

Rival carrier T-Mobile plans to launch its own 5G service in Boston on Dec. 6. Their network will not be as fast as Verizon's, but it is expected to have a longer range and the ability to penetrate walls.
