BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Mass. Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) released an update to the state's in-person learning rules for high school students Tuesday afternoon.
DESE said in the update that school districts statewide would need to offer full-time, in-person learning to grades 9-12 by May 17.
Similar to the Department's earlier moves to in-person learning, any district that does not comply with the new guidelines by May 17 will not have their instructional hours count, and will need to make them up at a later date.
School districts can apply for a waiver to delay their in-person return date for high school students, but may begin to run out of time with the end of the school year fast approaching. For example, the last day of school for Boston's seniors is June 9, just a few weeks after the Department's deadline, and the last day of school for all students is scheduled for June 18.
Parents will still have the choice of whether to send their children to in-person classrooms full-time, or to stay remote 5 days a week.
