Gov. Baker: State Expanding ICU Beds, Preparing For Surge In COVID-19 Cases

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker gave an update on the state's response to coronavirus today.

The Commonwealth, Baker said, has been trying to predict what medical demand will look like when the expected surge of cases hits Massachusetts.

This "peak" is estimated to show up between April 10-20, with the number of coronavirus cases being anywhere from 47,000 to 172,000, according to Baker.

Baker said the state will need to expand it's ICU beds by 500 in the next few weeks, as well as more ventilators.

Massachusetts has secured 1,000 beds for "step down care" at nursing homes to help hospitals make room for incoming new patients.
