BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Boston Public Garden swan boats opened for the season Saturday. Boston Mayor Marty Walsh attended the opening.
Walsh rode with students from Boston Public Schools for the first ride of the season.
The historic Swan Boats date back to the 1800s, according to their website. The first Swan Boats, created by Robert Paget, arrived on the lagoon in Public Garden in 1877. A driver pedals to operate the boat.
The Swan Boats are still operated by Robert Paget’s ancestors. Today, there are six boats total that run on the water.
The boats have become a cultural icon for Boston. They appeared in the children’s book, “Make Way for Ducklings,” which was first published in 1941.
