NORTH CONWAY, N.H. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A bear was spotted going toward a Friendly’s restaurant in North Conway, N.H. on Saturday.
The black bear was seen walking across the street in the direction of the restaurant. One onlooker posted the sighting on Instagram.
According to the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, black bears reside across ten counties in the state. They are the only species of bear in the state with a population of around 5,000.
The N.H. Fish and Game Department warns to keep your distance if you spot a bear. They recommend making noises such as clapping or talking to alert the bear of your presence. A bear may “slap the ground, huff, blow and chomp its teeth or rush you” if you are too close to the animal, according to the department’s website. If this happens, they say one should slowly back away from the bear while making eye contact and talking in a soft voice, but never run away or turn your back on the bear.
