Abington Soldier Killed In Afghanistan Honored In Weymouth Memorial

WEYMOUTH, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A plaque and stone were unveiled in Weymouth Sunday to honor of Army Sgt. 1st Class Jared Monti.

This was the 33rd stone that has been added to Shea Memorial Grove. Each stone is a tribute to a Medal of Honor recipient from Plymouth or Norfolk counties.

Monti was originally born in Abington and raised in Raynham. He died in the line of duty after being ambushed by the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2006.

Bill Sargent, commanding officer of the Association of Naval Aviation Patriot Squadron, said that Monti went “above and beyond the call of duty” for trying to rescue a wounded soldier.

“When he was going out from his position behind some rocks to rescue fellow members of his group. And on one of those times going out there, dragged people back to cover, he was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade,” Sargent said.

Former President Barack Obama award Monti the Medal of Honor posthumously.
