BOSTON (WBZ-AM) -- CBS News Chief White House Correspondent Major Garrett, the author of "Mr. Trump's Wild Ride: The Thrills, Chills, Screams, and Occasional Blackouts of an Extraordinary Presidency," spoke with WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Laurie Kirby Friday about his new account of covering President Donald Trump's administration.

"I let the reader decide what this is and what this isn't," Garrett said. "Do I mention that people have a hard time working around Donald Trump? And do I explain how many people have left from senior positions, and how difficult and taxing it is to be around him? And how there is at times a sense of not just tempestuousness, but volatility that he generates, which imposes an extra level of emotional anxiety on those close to him? Yes. But do I describe it as a presidency either suffering from or in the middle of a nervous breakdown? I do not. I just describe what has happened, some of the events that are crucial and in why those things happened, and how the president fit in that narrative--on the record, attributable, and factual."

And Garrett said he knows his book is competing with another work focused on Trump's dysfunctional White House--'Fear,' by Bob Woodward. But Garrett said his book is full of on-the-record quotes, not anonymous sources like Woodward's book.

"Going up against the Woodward Industrial Complex is a bit daunting, but our books are fundamentally different, and I believe if ever we are put on the stage together at the same time, he would say complementary things about my book, and I will about his," Garrett said.
