BOSTON (WBZ-AM) -- The NFL instituted a new helmet rule for the 2018 season and, so far, confusion. The rule is essentially redefining how players are allowed to tackle since they can't lower their heads.

If they do and and make contact with an opponent, it's a 15-yard penalty, automatic first down, and potential ejection. But, what's clean? What isn't?

The preseason's been filled with whistles and penalties, though Patriots coach Bill Belichick believes his group has an understanding of the new guidelines.

Devin McCourty isn't so sure.

"It's something I think that everyone has to adjust to. We're all out there, you know, sometimes, okay, that's what we watch, I get it. Then there's other times you're like, I don't really know. I think we all kind of see what they're looking for--you gottatry to adjust and play for it ... I feel like I don't have a clear picture on a lot of things, so I'm probably the wrong person to ask. I just try to go out there and play the way I've played my whole career."

The league's reportedly still having conversations about the application of the rule in preseason games and officials, coaches, and players will be provided a new video tutorial to make everything clearer before the regular season.
