NEWBURYPORT, MA (WBZ-AM) -- The pilot of a small plane that went off the runway into the woods at Plum Island Airport Wednesday is not injured.
A spokesperson for the Newburyport Fire Department says the pilot was able to extract himself from the plane after it came to rest in the treeline off Plum Island main runway shortly before 1:00PM.
The aircraft, an 2004 Alarus CH2000, is owned by Bald Eagle Flying Club based out of Portland, ME.
Randall Walls, president of the organization, tells WBZ NewsRadio1030 that the plane was a training aircraft used by club members.

"The pilot is ok and any damage to the aircraft is insignificant at this point. We're glad one of our members is unharmed and on the ground." he said.
No word on what caused the crash both the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board have notified of the incident.
