Final Boston Marathon Runner Finishes Race Early Tuesday Morning

BOSTON (WBZ-AM) -- It was 12:18 a.m. Tuesday when Mary Shertenlieb finally crossed the finish line, with her husband by her side.

Even at that hour, there was plenty of cheering going on along Boylston Street.

The Leukemia survivor had to stop in Wellesley, 16 miles into the race, because she was shivering uncontrollably and her lips were purple.

That's where hubby Rich stepped in, running the last 10 miles with her.

Mary ran for Dana-Farber, raising $30,000 for the hospital she said saved her life.

"I'm thinking more about the people that are currently fighting right now and the people who didn't make it," she told WBZ-TV. "And I'm thinking about, what if we'd raised a little bit more money, and it could've saved that one person?"

Mary told WBZ-TV last month she knew finishing the marathon would be an uphill battle, but she was determined.

"Any time I run and I'm like, 'Oh man, I want to quit, I just want to give up,' I'm like, you know what, I didn't quit, I didn't give up in the hospital," she said.
